ANCIENT THAMNA

Thamna is a small village, about 2 hours drive from Ahmedabad in the district Anand of Gujarat in India.

1)          Geographical  Introduction:

Village Thamna situated at North Latitudes 22.43 and East Longitude 73.05, and 5 kilometers away from the Umreth Railway station, 3 km from Umreth Busstand, 23 km from Anand (Now District H.Q.), 22 km from Nadiad and 10 km far from Dakor. From Lal Darwaja Umreth to Thamna there is an asphalt road which joints Dakor Nadiad Highway. The same road connecting Thamna-Lingda is also an asphalt road. There is also an asphalt road to dakor via Khihjalpur.

2)     POPULATION:

Total population of village Thamna is of 4558 inhabitent in which 2402 Men and 2156 are women. Here resides all sorts of races and casts like-Brahmins, Baniya,Patidar,Muslims,Suthar,Valands,Luhar,Soni,Darji,Kumbhar,Mochi,Vankar,
Harijans, Khrissties and more. Since last few years Adiwasis starts to come to our village as labourers, field workers and today some of them are settled in Thamna and because of that they are coming at third place in population countings. According to 1991 population countings t
here were 500 Patidar families in Thamna from which 110 patidar families residing in various cities and 150 families are abroad. We have over 1000 residential buildings in Thamna.

3)      OCCUPATION:

Main occupation of the people from Thamna is Agriculture and animal husbandry.We have total 1212 hector of land from which 1004 hector is ploughable. We have 1367 survey num
bers, 30 talabs and talavdies. Main agricultural crop is paddy and tobacco. Besides that we are planting banana,potatoes,peanuts/groundnuts,wheat and vegetables. In animal husbandry we have cows,  buffalos, and bullocks as main. We have over 40 tractors, 25-30 shops for daily consumable items and grocery, 4 tobacco processing units, five tobacco merchants, 3 floor mills and 8 poultry farms in our village.

4)      FACILITIES:

andli with 600 members and Rs.300,480/ as share reserves.  They have reserve and other funds with them. They buy crop produced in village. We have Telibiya sahkari Mandli and tobacco mandli. Also we have post office, Telephone facilities,new building for panchayat, Bank, in the middle of the village there stands Babalbhai Mehta Sarvajanik Library and above that there is a Late Shantaben Chimanbhai Jiwabhai Patel Smarak hall. Mahatma Gandhi Smark Dawakhana and Kasturba Gandhi Smarak Prasuti Gruh is constructed from the reserve of Mahatma Gandhi Fund and women organisation runs sewing classes for ladies. On the bank of talab there is a beautiful garden known as Rambag which is well-known in entire Gujarat because there was the residence of Babalbhai Mehta . At the left of the entrance of the village there is a statue of Late Shri Lalbahadur Shastri, then Prime Minister of India. In the garden of primary school there is a statue of Babalbhai. At the entrance of  Shri K.C.Patel High school there is a statue of Swami Vivekanand. By placing the right statues at proper place our village atmosphere has become inspiring. On the bank of the Shedhi rivier there is a cremation house where a room is built to store the wood used in burial. People can use the wood by paying nominal charges.

We have Shishu Sanskar Kendra (Balmandir) run by Babalbhai Mehta Suvarna Jayanti Trust. Building for the Balmandir is being constructed, with the help of Shri Naginbhai Sheth presently residing in USA , in memory of their children Arjun & Sahdev. Primary school for boys commenced on 18.1.1862 and school for girl started on 20.2.1924. Upon commencing  National School Boys and girls school turned into co-education so Kumarshala and Kanyashala became one.

Previously one primary school was run by C
hristion Missionary which is also now transferred to primary school. We also have Madresa for Muslim children. We had English teaching school of three classes which due to national educational movement was closed. From 1952  High School was re-established. Shri Kantibhai Chhaganbhai Patel,residing abroad, donated  six lacks Rupees to construct Shri K.C.Patel High School building. Bhavaa’s college began between Umreth Dakor Road which fecilitates college education for our village children.

5)         Financial Transactions:

We have a branch of central Bank of India. Bank and vividh karyakari sahakari mandli extends loan services to the needy people of Thamna.

6)         Religious Places:

In the C
entre of village we have Ramji Mandir, In Bazzar is Kamnath & Gangnath Mahadev Mandir, besides that we have Vahrai Mata, Ambaji Mata, Khodiar Mata, Thamnai Mata,Vahanvati Mata, Sinduri Mata and Laxmi Mata Mandir. Moreover we have Swaminarayan Mandir (vadtal), Bhathiji mandir,Ramdev pir mandir,Hanumanji mandir, Baliadev mandir. We have parabadi and dharmashala, masjid and church. Famous chaturbhuj mandir is at nearby village khijalpur.
